Design and Build
The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max has a stainless-steel frame with a glossy finish like its smaller brother, it also features Ceramic Shield front with an oleophobic coating. The back is a glass back with a frosted finish, a case is advised to protect it as it can shatter on impact.
The phone is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. Silver, Graphite, Gold, Pacific Blue are the colour options you can choose from. The phone is quite large at 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.4 mm and a hefty weigh in at 228g.
The screen is a 6.7″ Retina XDR OLED screen of 1,284 x 2,778 px resolution and a pixel density of 458ppi with pick brightness of 800 nits which is a joy to view in bright conditions. The 120Hz refresh rate is new to iPhone 12 Pro Max and has touch sensing. Other display features include; HDR10, Dolby Vision support, wide colour gamut and True Tone.
User Interface and Performance

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max comes installed with iOS 14.1, upgradable to iOS 14.4. It is just as fast as the previous iOS thanks to Apple A14 Bionic chip (5nm) – Hexa-core (2×3.1 GHz Firestorm + 4×1.8 GHz Icestorm with 3.1GHz Turbo boost) Apple CPU which is similar to the 12 Pro. It has a four-core Apple GPU for the gamers and a 16-core Apple NPU (a specialized circuit that implements all the necessary control and arithmetic logic necessary to execute machine learning).
Camera Quality
Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max has an improved triple rear camera setup which is an upgrade to the previous 11 Pro Max. It is a triple 12MP camera with the Primary – 1.7µm pixels, 26mm, f/1.6 featuring IBIS and Dual Pixel AF. The Ultra wide-angle camera features 1.0µm pixels, 13mm at f/2.4 and a 120-degree field of view. The Telephoto camera has 1.0µm pixels, 65mm, f/2.2 featuring OIS and 2.5x optical zoom. The dual-LED flash with slow sync will certainly help with the low light shots. Picture processing has Night Mode, Smart HDR 3 and Deep Fusion.
The camera setup takes the best photos of the 12 series lineup and I must say that they look great. Daylight photoshoots are good and the night mode is quite capable. The photo enthusiasts will definitely enjoy the iPhone 12 Pro Max shoots.
The selfie camera is not that different from the one that came with the 11 Pro Max with Dual camera – 23mm 12MP f/2.2 front-facing camera with HDR mode + 3D TOF camera. It comes equipped with Night Mode, Smart HDR 3 and Deep Fusion for those low light shots.
Video Recording
The capabilities of the iPhone 12 Pro Max in terms of video recording are very good but still no 8K support. The rear cameras can take 2160p at 60 and 30fps, 1080p at 30, 60, 120 and 240fps video recording with wider dynamic range and spatial sound. OIS + EIS capabilities are also enabled with Dolby Vision.
The selfie camera is capable of 2160p at 60 and 30fps, 1080p at 30, 60, and 120fps video recording with wider dynamic range and spatial sound. EIS is also enabled on the front-facing cameras.
Battery
Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a 3,687mAh battery equipped with 20W fast charging. It also supports 15W Qi wireless charging using MagSafe which uses magnetic attachments. This coupled with the famous Apple chipset efficiency makes the 12 Pro Max Battery rating according to Gsmarena’s endurance test at 95h. This is can push usage to two days.
Connectivity
Comes with either a Single SIM with eSIM support from the carrier or a physical Dual SIM on 5G and 4G. Supported Wi-Fi tech a/b/g/n/ac/6 with Bluetooth 5.0. The single Lightning port which Apple is surely working on probably getting rid of in the future.
